How to Prepare for Extreme Cold
Residents and businesses can take steps to prepare their homes and facilities for extreme cold temperatures. To prepare, remember the 4 Ps:
People
Check on your family, elderly and neighbors that may need help winterizing their home or a warm place to stay.
Pets
Bring pets indoors and ensure adequate warmth for livestock.
Plants
Bring potted plants indoors or put them in your garage. Apply a thick layer of mulch around other plants. Water your plants ahead of extreme cold to trap heat or slow heat loss around the plant. Or, cover your plants with a sheet, box, or container.
Pipes
Cover or insulate exposed pipes, including those under raised homes. Open cabinets to allow heat to reach under-sink pipes in your home. Leave faucets dripping during a hard freeze.
